During the steel crisis in 1993, a bitter labour dispute took place in Duisburg-Rheinhausen over the preservation of the Krupp steelworks. I decided to capture this in a long-term photo reportage and first travelled to the Ruhr area for a weekend.
With a little help, I was able at short notice to photograph inside the plant as well – something that was officially not permitted at the time.
Inspired by those first impressions, I decided to return as soon as possible – this time for a longer stay.
But already on the motorway back to Munich I heard on the news that the closure of the plant had now been finally decided and the long labour dispute had come to an end.
Thus, my planned first long-term project ultimately remained just a brief weekend fragment.
