As a child I loved outings with my parents to Cologne Zoo. In later years, however, zoo visits left me feeling increasingly saddened.
In the early 1990s, by then living in Munich, I spontaneously roamed Hellabrunn Zoo with my camera to show why.
What emerged was a small yet powerful series, which later found its way into my first portfolio as a photographer.
Shortly after my inaugural visit to the Hamburg publishers, the picture editor of ZEITmagazin received an article stating that animals do not belong in zoos. She remembered my pictures, and so, as a newcomer, I unexpectedly ended up with two double pages in the magazine entitled "Caged Wilderness".
What a start!
